Opposition leader in the civic council attributes poor quality of works done in the city to the ruling BJP; claims that 70% of works have received minimal attention

In what seems to have become a daily routine for Udayshankar, the opposition leader in the BBMP council once again yesterday leveled allegations of poor quality works being carried out in the city, which he attributed to the ruling BJP.

According to his latest claims 70 per cent of work related to asphalting of roads, construction of new roads, public buildings, drainage works and repair of pavements have received minimal attention, hence leading to increasing potholes.

"The shock will be realised if one is to go by the total sample sheet circulated by the Quality Control Division to BBMP, which rates the work carried during 2010, after the elected representative were chosen," Udayshankar said.

"Citizens money has gone down the drain once again since the low quality of work done by BBMP has resulted in over Rs 100 crore loss. These works cannot be undertaken by the engineer and contractor without the knowledge of the ruling council," he added.

Any work pertaining to construction requires good quality of sand, but the quality supplied to the BBMP remains a mystery. Udayshankar informed that the sand mafia is on the rise and the total projects undertaken in 2010 till date, is 208, out of which 146 projects have been deemed poor quality. He attributed this to the use of low quality of filtered sand.

"How the BBMP approves sand of such poor quality is anybody's guess," the opposition leader said. The Technical Vigilance Committee to BBMP, which is empowered to grade the work quality before the bills are cleared, refused to take any blame. Instead a member of the committee said, "We did not get any instructions from the BBMP commissioner."
