52 students from MAE engineering college get zero in a paper, while 12 from MIT marked absent

The University of Pune (UoP) has outdone itself in making mistakes. This time they have awarded zero marks to about 65 engineering students belonging to two well-known city colleges.

Third-year engineering students belonging to two colleges under the Maharashtra Academy of Engineering and Education Research (MAEER) namely the Maharashtra Academy of Engineering (MAE) in Alandi and Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) in Paud Road, have all received zero marks in their marksheet issued on March 19.

In the first case, 52 students from electronics and telecommunications of MAE who appeared for their third semester examinations were marked absent and hence awarded zero marks.

This created panic among the students as the last date for filling up forms for the next semester was on March 25 and could mean a loss of year to students.

Head of electronic and telecommunication department Professor Jayant Bapat said that he immediately informed the UoP after the mark sheets were distributed.

"Yes, the situation was quite serious as an entire batch had been affected. But we followed up with the varsity and fresh mark sheets were issued today," he said.

Not so lucky
While these students had the strength of numbers and an active HOD to resolve their issue, third year students of mechanical engineering (sandwich) course of MIT's Paud Road campus have not been so lucky.

About 10 to 12 students who are now in the fourth year received the results for the backlog of third year on March 19.

However, the students were shocked to know that not a single of them had passed, worse still, they had all scored zero in practicals, VIVA and the theory paper they had appeared for.

PB Joshi, head of mechanical engineering department was not even aware of the plight of the students.
"These students are doing their training in industry and I don't know about the goof-up in their mark sheets. I will contact the students tomorrow to check," he said.

MiD DAY contacted four students from this group who confirmed the error.

"One of our professors has taken a copy of the marksheet and wrote a letter to the exam department asking for correction at the earliest. We will wait for a week before we jump to any conclusion," said a student.

Placement worries
While students await revised mark sheets, they expressed fear of diminished prospects at campus interviews if the issue is not resolved soon.

"So far, the cream of students have already been recruited. Now the next batch of students is appearing for campus recruitment interviews and these days most companies want a clear record or no backlog for candidates selected. In that case, if this issue is not resolved soon we might not get jobs even if we deserve them because of the university's mistake," he said.

Another student said the situation was frustrating as this mistake had brought down their grand total which is a consideration during placements.

"There are people among us who had a backlog of three subjects and hence 300 marks were at stake. Imagine if we don't get corrected marksheet by the time a company approaches us. Our total marks will be reduced by 300 which is a huge difference considering the competition," he said.
