Like any teenager, Vaibhav Vaity too was bursting with energy after he took the field for the first time for his school Rosary High School (Mazagaon) at Azad Maidan yesterday.
And his Nike-MSSA inter-school football tournament U-16 Div IV debut was a dream one as Vaibhav scored a hat-trick in the team's 4-0 win over Fazlani Academy. Vinayak Dalvi was the other scorer.
Though a good player, Vaibhav could not play last year because of his mother's demise. "My mother expired last year and there were a few other things because of which I could not play last year. I was very dejected but took heart from the fact that I had one more year of school left," Vaibhav said.
For someone who was looking forward to playing so anxiously, the 15-year-old had very little expectations from his first match.
"We play in the school compound and this was the first time I was playing on a big ground. I had not even thought of scoring a single goal. It feels great to start with a win and to score a hat-trick on debut. Being a striker, the team expects me to score goals and I was happy not to let them down," Vaibhav said.
Equally thrilled was Rosary coach Bernard Alphonso. "Vaibhav is a very promising player. He is our main weapon.
To begin our tournament with a 4-0 win is good but it's only the beginning and we need to keep playing well."
