West Bengal: Miscreant dead in police firing

Howrah (WB): A man, stated to be an anti-social element, was shot dead when policemen clashed with a gang in Belur area of Howrah district, police said. Two policemen were injured and a police vehicle was damaged during the clash that took place at Votebagan locality last night.


Following reports that a group of people were loitering in the locality with arms, police went to the spot the anti-socials attacked them, police said.


After two men in uniform were injured and a vehicle was damaged, the police opened fire and injured one Ganga Mahato.


When Mahato was taken to hospital, he was declared dead on arrival, police said adding he was accused in several criminal cases.

Two of the gang members were arrested.
