Star lawyer and former law minister Arun Jaitley didn't turn up to bat for the Kumbles in the Supreme Court, after all.

The BJP strong man was to have argued the case for Chetana Kumble, cricketer Anil Kumble's wife, who is fighting for custody of her 15-year-old child.

Prashant Bhushan, son of former union law minister Shanthi Bhushan, argued the case on behalf of Chetana's former husband Kumar Jahgirdar yesterday.

Jahgirdar is seeking permanent custody of their child Aaruni. The judges adjourned the case for three weeks.

The court hall had filled up with visitors keen to watch the two legal eagles in action but Jaitley disappointed them.

As the hearing started, Kumble's lawyers, who carried a copy of MiD DAY, cited the report 'Jaitley bats for Kumble' and reportedly argued that Jahgirdar was trying to get undue publicity out of it.

However, one of the judges observed that the media would cover the case as Kumble was a celebrity.u00a0u00a0

"Both the petitioner and the respondent were advised to explore options to resolve the problem," said a source.

The lawyers of Chetana and Jahgirdar will now have to facilitate a discussion between the two parties in three weeks and arrive at a settlement. Chetana and Jahgirdar were not available for comment.
