Where music is more of a passion than a business

The name Gatozone may give you the impression that it is a group of sci-fi lovers. The fact is that it is a group of music lovers. Headed by Alok Kulkarni, it was formed by him in 2005. Alok's interest in music was inherited from his grandmother. "She was an Indian classical violinist who used to play on AIR (All India Radio). And I, too, started learning the violin, but left it mid-way," says Alok.

"After we shifted house from Salisbury Park to Kothrud when I was in Class 7, I got my father's guitar, which I started playing. I stayed with the guitar, from then on."

He started playing the Ventures, Rare Earth, KC and the Sun Shine band and some country music too. Even after a post-graduation,u00a0 music remains his full-time occupation. Gatozone took off with one of his close friends, "gymu00a0 pal" Dheeraj Chajed (26), who asked Alok to teach him the guitar. His fame spread, by word of mouth. The group hasu00a0 now expanded to 60 people.

"I teach them to be better musicians. Two of my students have their own sound studios," says Alok. "Music is more of a passion for me, and not really a business."
