Police say no action against women as they remained indoors even when men took party on to road
A loud Saturday night bash organised by a bunch of youngsters, among them some Marathi actors and actresses, led to the arrest of eight people, but residents of Erandwane are not satisfied with the action taken. Now the question being raised by the residents is that if the women at the party were also behaving indecently, then why did the police not arrest them as well.
Among the young women celebrities at the party was actress Saee Tamhankar.PI Chandrakant Ghodke of the Kothrud police station said, "The matter is closed, there is no question of arresting a lady who was present with the eight. When our officers arrested the eight people, the ladies were inside the flat."
Women constables
Earlier, police sources said that despite the fact that the women were also involved in the ruckus, they were not arrested as women constables were not around at the time. Asked about this, Commissioner of Police Meeran Chadhha Borwankar said women constables are attached to all the police stations in the city.
"I have been informed that when the control room received the call about the party, a team from Kothrud went to the flat. It is possible that the women constables were not part of the team which went there, but I don't agree with the contention that there were no women constables present at the Kothrud police station," said Borwankar.
Abhishek Shetty (27) of Erandwane, Suhrud Godbole (26) of Deccan, Saurabh Deshmukh (28) of Vimannagar), Aastad Kale (26) of Shukrawar Peth, Kaustubh Deshpande (26 of Kothrud, Amey Gosavi (27) of Kothrud, Ajinkya Khambekar (30) of Deccan, Sidhdharth Benninger (29) of Deccan were the names of the young men arrested in the wee hours of Sunday. They were later released on bail.u00a0
Medical tests
Reacting on why a medical test was done only on the men and not on the women, including Tamhankar, Borwankar said, "If the girls have not committed any offence then why should a medical test be conducted on them. When a woman is at her home and has consumed alcohol, then there is no need of conducting medical test on her. There are certain restrictions on us and we cannot intervene unless there is some serious offence committed by a woman."
The police conducted medical tests on the eight men who were suspected to be under the influence of alcohol as they were on the road and their behavior was disorderly.Asked about reports that there had been an attempt to misbehave with Tamhankar, Borwanakar said, "If the lady comes forward to lodge a complaint of molestation or attempt to molestation, we will take action." She added that the sections applied against the accused were correct.
