With love from Vrindavan

A sparkling number like this will not only keep the fire burning between you and her this Valentine's, but also make sure the kitchen fires of over 500 widows from Vrindavan are alive

They've lost their love, but are pinning their hopes on you. The widows of Vrindavan are making sure your big day bears a happy shine, so it doesn't hurt to add it to theirs, too. A jewellery show in town puts on sale intricate artworks by pious white-clad women from the banks of the Ganga, and every penny from the proceeds will go towards their upliftment, lodging and empowerment.

Losing a spouse isn't all about generous wills, insurances and bank nominations for these artists. "We often forget that only 140 kilometres from Delhi exist these helpless women who are shunned by the society. They need us," points out Dr V Mohini Giri, founder of the four decade old Guild For Service, the voluntary group behind the endeavour. Other supporters include Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, danseuse Geeta Chandran, socialite Devi Cherian and actors Tisca Chopra and Sushma Seth.

Inspired by individuality

Created under the supervision of designer Ahalya from Rasvihar, the assortment of bangles, rings, earrings and neckpieces made of 18 carat gold, diamonds and gemstones are all about ethnic elegance and exuberance. "All my jewellery are designed with a specific person in mindu00a0not necessarily someone I've met. Many times, I'd make jewellery that was inspired by a particular person, and soon enough the same person would walk in and claim the piece," smiles Ahalya. Isn't there a small chance that could be you, too?
