The youngest dacoit of the Dudhani gang, 20-year-old Japansingh Sheetalsingh alias Guddusingh Dudhani, who had escaped arrest on November 10, was shot last morning while trying to loot the Rajesh petrol pump on the Pune-Ahmednagar road with other gang members.

Petrol pump security guard Santoshkumar Shrivastava (36) shot Japansingh, a resident of Lonavla, around 1.45 am yesterday while his other three accomplices managed to escape.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Shankar Kengar said: "Before going to Rajesh petrol pump, the Dudhani gang had first looted the Reliance petrol pump around 1am. They had come in a white Tavera and had sharp weapons with them. The dacoits threatened, beat up and locked the employees, looted Rs 10,000 and fled.

"At Rajesh pump, they threatened two employees Raju Ghodke and Deepak Pankhambe and took Rs 70,000.

Then they asked for more cash after which the employees asked them to go to the terrace. Security personnel Shrivastava was on the terrace. Dudhani asked him to hand over the cash. As Dudhani approached the staircase, Shrivastava fired at him with his 12 bore firearm. Japansingh collapsed while the rest fled."

The rural police were informed and they carried out nakabandi to nab the other dacoits, but in vain. Japansingh was taken to hospital but he succumbed to injuries. Superintendent of Police Pratap Dighavkar also visited the spot.
