Like Hippocrates did, when he came up with the popular aphorism 'Arts Longa Vita Brevis', or 'Life is long, Art lasts long.' Artists Subhadarshini Singh, Sunando Mazumdar and Ashish Bose have taken his thoughts seriously.
Their group exhibition will depict medicine in the arts, with expressions we're sure you haven't witnessed, ever. Shubadarshini's work is a triptych on the history of medicine, Sunando expresses his thoughts through his photography and Ashish in sculptures.u00a0
u00a0"I feel medical science has not received its place in arts in India, as it has everywhere else. No one knows how Surshuta or Jivaka looked," says Subhadarshini, a medical journalist, of her tribute.
"Van Gogh's portraits of his doctors have immortalised otherwise mediocre healers. Some of the most enduring paintings are portraits of doctors, anatomy lessons or the artist in illness. But none from India, in the past or now," she goes on.
The show also explores little known figures, patients' psyche, artistic imaginations of medical personalities and attitude of the healers and the healed. The media used include photography, installation art, sculpture and video installation. If that doesn't sound all too different, there's a song, too, by psychiatrist Dr Pervez Imam. Let's sing to the scalpel.
