Youth held for extorting Rs 25 lakh

An arts graduate from Rahul Gandhi's constituency Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, Manvendra Pratapsinh (24), was arrested in Pune for extorting money from a local businessman.

According to the police, the jobless youth worked as a daily wage labourer before he was driven to crime.

On Monday night, Pune's Anti Extortion Cell arrested the resident of Pratapgarh, a village close to Rai Bareilly on charges of extorting Rs 25 lakh from a businessman in Nigdi.

Senior PI Kishor Jadhav, anti extortion cell, arrested the youth who was threatening businessman Manojlal Lodha (50) that he would abduct and harm his children in case of non-payment.

"Pratapsingh arrived in Pune on Monday for extorting money from Lodha. The latter said that he was out of town and asked him to accept money from his employee Bhanvar," said Jadhav.

"We laid the trap at KSB chowk and nabbed Pratapsinh while accepting the money," he added.

Incidentally, three years ago Lodha had been kidnapped and released after allegedly paying a ransom of Rs 18 lakh.

Hence, not wanting to take any chances, Lodha filed an complaint with the Crime branch when he started getting extortion calls.
