A Ugandan cobbler, who has a severely deformed face, has become an unlikely pop sensation on the Internet with his music videos racking up over four million views on YouTube. Godfrey Baguma, 47, who hails from Kyanzana, was first thrust into the limelight after winning an event to find the country’s most unusual looking man. Now, his status as a local celebrity has led him to a fresh career in African pop music.
But, for a long time, the singer was unaware about his mysterious condition and was fearful that he would pass it onto his eight children. “I am afraid because I have a little daughter who kind of resembles me. I look at her head and I believe that she might look like me,” he said.
After Godfrey’s health began declining, Tony Wilson, head of medicine at Mbarara Hospital in the western region of Uganda, decided to carry out tests to diagnose him. Dr Wilson said, “He has very widespread abnormality in his head, pressing on various parts of his brain. His posture is compressing his chest and this is why he’s not breathing well.”
Six weeks after an MRI scan with Dr Wilson, Godfrey received the full examination he always hoped for. He was diagnosed with a rare condition called Fibrodysplasia, which affects the growth and placement of cells and tissue. With correct medication, Godfrey’s health can be managed. He said, “I feel glad that he just told me about my condition. I learned that I am human.”
