It is Mumbai all the way as the city’s decentralised model of battling Covid has earned praise pan-India. Some of the outstanding facets of this model are that there are decentralised control rooms at the ward level.

There is considerable citizen engagement and tele counselling, once again at the ward level, and there is also a centralised dashboard for hospital beds and makeshift ambulances. It is a model that needs replication, say experts as numbers bear out the most important aspect, that it is working.

A deeper analysis will unearth how these ward level rooms and systems work and what exactly decentralisation means and why it is successful. For this edit, it is sufficient that the model is earning praise from all and states and cities are being exhorted to mirror that, allowing of course local tweaks.

In the first wave of the pandemic, we initially saw cases soar in Dharavi. They were then brought under control and intra-city officials were told to replicate the Dharavi model in different wards or were at least inspired enough to see if they could do the same.

This is the pattern we need to follow now. When we see a model that is working, that is bringing the numbers down, it is vital that officials replicate it. They may be unable to do so in its entirety but take the best aspects, apply it to your area of jurisdiction, see if this works for you and then stick to the model.

Lives are more important than inane ego battles and finger-pointing which politicians at every level are so famous for. Do not be too proud to say you have taken from a model and applied the same, seeing that it has been successful in tackling the pandemic. Push behind your pride and petty politics. The country has had enough.
