One uplifting piece of news amidst all the darkness and turmoil of the ongoing pandemic is not sensational. It will not make the headlines or buzz on social media. It is significant though. The Thane police website is now accessible to the visually impaired, says news reports.

Reports said that visually impaired people can read the website with special software which can be downloaded on mobile phones.

This is welcome simply because it makes a demographic able to access the website, seek information, and clarification, and whatever else without waiting for somebody else to help them do so. This is also hugely beneficial to the differently abled not just in the obvious sense but also for their morale. Self-reliance fosters a sense of pride and by doing so, you are uplifting a significant section of people, allowing them more participation in mainstream life.

There has to be more inclusivity in all aspects. Other police stations can follow suit. The traffic police too can explore this. The BMC website can be made accessible to the differently abled. There are myriad other government avenues that can become user friendly for everybody, just so that there is a broader spectrum of people who become self-dependent.

Similarly in the real world, this edit space has always batted for better and futuristic design so that all can access buildings, structures and generally negotiate the city with much more ease than they do now. From Braille crossings to a smoother path for wheelchairs, we can put our best technical minds and really open up the world in every sense for the differently abled. Viva website, which is a great example, and we hope this inspires others in every stream to adapt for a more equal plane and help those who are unfortunately left out in certain aspects to lead fuller lives.
