According to The Mirror, the operation to capture Abaaoud was carried out in Athens after it was discovered that he had been directing a terror cell in Belgium from Greece.
A Belgian anti-terror source said the plan was to target Abaaoud before anti-terrorism raids in Belgium but this did not happen.
The suspected mastermind was killed in gun battle with cops in Paris five days after the 13 November attacks that killed 130 people.
The failed operation in Greece was reportedly meant to have taken place before the one carried out by security forces in the town of Verviers in eastern Belgium on 15 January.
