Smartphone maker BlackBerry has come under fire after it emerged that its customers were able to access illegal sex content on the internet, including child pornography.

BlackBerry has failed to provide Internet blocks that protect users, including children, from accessing a list of banned websites, the Daily Mail reports.

Britain's telecoms regulator Ofcom said it was 'very concerned' about the issue and that it was talking urgently to Canada's Research in Motion (RIM), owners of BlackBerry, over solving the problem.

According to the paper, a spokesman for RIM said that by the end of 2011, they would have a solution in place that blocks access to these sites.

All mobile phone operators in Britain are signed up to a code of practice, which ensures they apply a block on access to sex sites on the Internet.

A spokesman for the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre pointed out that all service providers have a responsibility to help safeguard the online environment and close down any opportunities for offenders.
