The animal, 30, was spray-painted Wednesday night.
The employees at the Sussex Horse Rescue Trust in Uckfield, East Sussex, were left dumbfounded by the abrupt transformation.
"I noticed something was wrong when a zebra came in for a feed in the morning instead of a donkey. We did not see who did it so it must have happened sometime overnight. It must have taken the person who did it at least 20 minutes to paint the stripes," The Sun quoted yard hand Felix Green as saying.
"He is not in pain but the paint really smells. He must be uncomfortable."
Green said another donkey had an "obscene image" painted on his side.
