The blast took place at around 9.15 a.m. along Hsamayi Road on Sunday when a convoy of NATO-led forces was passing by the area, witness Mohammad Najib told Xinhua.
"One foreign military vehicle was severely damaged by the blast. Several civilian vehicles were also damaged by the attack," the witness said.
"We still cannot provide details on casualties. There is fear of possible casualties as the bombing took place during the morning rush hour," a security source told Xinhua.
Troops cordoned off the area shortly after the blast, keeping people from gathering at the scene, fearing that there might be a second blast.
Several ambulances and fire engines rushed to the spot.
A thick black smoke was seen rising above the site.
