The US and Indonesia today asked Myanmar's military junta to immediately release pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, saying her trial was "unjustified".
The Nobel laureate opposition leader is facing trial for allegedly violating the terms of her house arrest. "Let me again reiterate that the charges against her (Aung San Suu Kyi) are baseless," US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said after meeting here her Indonesian counterpart Noer Hassan Wirajuda.
"We call for her immediate release," Clinton said, adding the issue was discussed between the two leaders during their meeting. Terming the trial of Aung San Suu Kyi as unfortunate, Wirajuda said Indonesia had issued strong statement in this regard last month.
"We remind Myanmar of its obligation under the new ASEAN charter, and likewise through the previous calls made by our leaders to immediately release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi," the minister said. Aung San Suu Kyi has spent 13 of the last 19 years under house arrest.
She is currently being tried by the military junta because an American national allegedly intruded in her home and stayed overnight.
Junta says this was in violation of her house arrest condition. The pro-democracy has pleaded not guilty arguing that she has done nothing wrong as the American national was not invited by her and he entered her home uninvited.
