London: Theresa May started her first full day in office as UK’s new Prime Minister yesterday with a series of sackings.

May announced her first big shake-up just minutes after entering Downing Street by replacing George Osborne as UK Chancellor with Philip Hammond. Former energy and climate change secretary Amber Rudd has been promoted as Home Secretary, with David Davis being made in charge of a new department for Exiting the European Union and being dubbed as the “Brexit minister.”

Michael Gove, who challenged May in the Conservative Party leadership race, was among the first sackings. He was replaced by Liz Truss, a former environment minister. Several other aides of former Prime Minister David Cameron were dropped from the frontline and pushed to the party’s backbenches (see box: Dropped).

No emergency budget
Meanwhile, finance minister Hammond ruled out an emergency budget in response to economic turbulence triggered by ‘Brexit’. He said a budget would be submitted towards the end of the year, as planned by his predecessor.
