Thousands of people at the concert looked on in horror as she was ambushed by a man dressed in black and fake blood spurted down her chest.

It was a routine performance for the singer but the scene on stage at the MEN Arena came after the mass slaughter by cab driver Derrick Bird, who killed 12 and injured 11 others in a gun rampage across Cumbria region before taking his own life.

Many who attended the concert thought that Lady Gaga's act was tasteless, as it was soon after the killings in Cumbria. She performed a similar act in Paris on May 21.

One mother said, "It was extremely tasteless to see her pretend to be attacked in such a gory way especially in front of young children."

Gaga is an avid user of Twitter but so far has kept quiet on the issue.

Before the concert it appeared the main controversy was security not allowing concert-goers to wear coke cans in their hair, as she did in her film clip Telephone.

"All is well at MEN Arena, feel free to wear your coke cans proud in hair. Security has been reprimanded for censoring little monster freedoms," she tweeted.

She has one more concert in Great Britain, at Sheffield, before her Monster Ball tour returns to North America.
