He used a flare to alert rescuers to his broken-down boat.
Trevor Snodgrass, local SES area controller, said that the man was on a camping trip with her partner when their tinnie got beached on a riverbank at the mouth of Pine River Bay, northwest of Weipa late on Friday.
He said the man, whose first name is Peter, couldn't get the engine to work after digging the boat free.
Snodgrass said Peter's partner hailed down a passing vessel where she alerted authorities while her partner watched the boat over night.
"She walked about 1km to wave down another boat which couldn't reach their beached tinnie," News.com.au quoted Snodgrass said.
Estuarine crocodile was caught at Pormpuraaw halfway between Karumba and Weipa last night.
