One picture, put up without permission at the Royal Hibernian Academy, showed a nude, portly Cowen holding a pair of blue underpants -- but perhaps fortunately for art lovers, it was strategically cropped at the waist.
Another revealing portrait showing him on the toilet appeared at the National Gallery. Both were removed within minutes of their being hung.
"We certainly can't condone work coming in this way," Rebecca Gale of the Royal Hibernian Academy told the broadcaster. "We'll be keeping an eye out for work coming in this way from now on."
Cowen's poll ratings have plummeted in recent months as Ireland's once-booming economy battles recession.
