Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and 22 other ministers equipped with oxygen tanks flew for a cabinet meeting to the Kalapattar plateau on Mount Everest yesterday to highlight the impact of climate change on the Himalayas.

The cabinet then approved the speech to be delivered by the PM at the climate change meet in Copenhagen.

'It's their fault'

Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala said, the Nepalese leader would ask rich countries to contribute 1.5 per cent of their gross domestic product to help developing nations cope with climate change.

"It's their carbon emissions that are causing us to suffer. We are making this demand to protect future generations," she said.

Undersea Meet

In October, the Maldivian president and ministers held the world's first underwater cabinet meeting in a symbolic cry for help over rising sea levels that threaten the archipelago's existence.
