The 21-year-old man was found naked and struggling to save himself while the water was up to his neck and he had more than two metres of water around him as the tide rushed in.
The dipper's 18-year-old friend, who was also naked, had also been stuck but somehow managed to pull himself free and swam to safety when the local Coastguard received an emergency call from a 13-year-old girl who said her brother and his friend were in the water.
"We believe he initially became stuck in the mud," the Daily Telegraph quoted rescue officer who waded in to grab the naked man, as saying.
"He was struggling to keep his head above the surface. They were both naked - I've no idea what they were doing," he stated.
The two men were taken by Portsmouth''s Queen Alexandra Hospital ambulance to, while three others, two 13-year-old girls and a 19-year-old boy, were dealt with by the police.
