Amateur photographer Terry Bowen, 56, took the photograph from the back veranda of his house on February 2.
Bowen, who suffers from terminal liver cancer, said he felt hope when he saw the image.
"I always see these things drawing me out of the house, and they're there to pick me up. I feel as if someone or something is looking over me and that there's a reason why I'm still here. When I look at things like this it adds to my positive outlook," the Macarthur Chronicle quoted him as saying.
Picton Uniting Church pastor Geraldine Clarkson described the picture as "uplifting and inspirational".
"In Christianity we have this thing called thin places, where we give God the space to touch us and lift us," she said.
"And for the man who took the photograph, that may be his.
"People find Jesus and God in lots of images and if others can see this and it gives them hope and inspiration, then that is wonderful."
