Alexander Boyd, 76, told police he wished he had murdered Peter and Helen Gallosi last August. Boyd, of North Kessock, on the Black Isle, also said he had planned to kill another neighbour before returning home to kill his wife and 'possibly' himself.
The pensioner, who has been suffering from cancer and depression, was arrested and spent the last six and a half months in custody despite being a first offender. Inverness Sheriff Court heard Boyd could remember nothing about the incident, reports the Daily Record.
Ordering Boyd to remain under social work supervision for 18 months, Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood said, "You must attend for mental health treatment if it is required by your supervising officer."
He also banned Boyd from entering North Kessock for the same period, although defence lawyer Marc Dickson said Boyd and his wife intended to live elsewhere. The Sheriff added, "As you are 76, a first offender and you've served the equivalent of a year's jail sentence while on remand, unpaid work is not necessary."
Fiscal depute Roderick Urquhart revealed that a year before the attack, the Gallosis told police Boyd's dog had bitten someone and it was later put down.
