The French capital was buzzing with activity last week as the world of fashion and glamour had descended upon Paris to witness this year's spring summer collection designs by top designers.
Around the same time, opened an exhibition that showcases the relatively little known aspect of one of India's (and world's) famous literary figures.
Celebrating Tagore: The exhibition at Petit Palais is made up of 98
paintings and sketches which were created between 1928 and 1939

started painting only at the age of 67.

Rabindranath Tagore is known for his towering achievements in the world of literature. Among many things, he is known for being the first non-Westerner to win the Nobel Prize and the author of our national anthem. This exhibition though, is about Tagore, the painter, whose creations have been put on display at Petit Palais. The exhibition, organised as a part of celebration of Tagore's 150th birth anniversary, is made up of 98 paintings and sketches which were created between 1928 and 1939. One cannot help but feel awed by the variety that Tagore possessed as a painter. And the fact that he started practicing the new art form at the age of 67 after having achieved so much in the field of literature, is truly extraordinary.
Though not an expert in this field, the reporter couldn't help but get transfixed at the simple yet mysterious nature of most of the paintings. A simple looking landscape or a human face stimulates chain of thoughts and feelings.The human faces and strange looking animals in the paintings leave behind a haunting impression.
"There's either a story or some deep philosophy behind each creation," is a response that gets automatically triggered in the observer's mind.
Tagore's creations have a variety of range. Human faces, plants/flowers, animals and landscape are some of the common themes of his work. Every creation also differs because of the technique employed.
The author of our national anthem produced 2500 paintings in his lifetime. Having already achieved so much in the field of literature, the quality and quantity of his paintings is truly staggering.
The exhibition will continue till March 11.
