Security forces are carrying out a complete scan of all the people rescued from the police academy here yesterday amid fears that some of the attackers may have mingled with them after the eight-hour siege.

"No one knows how many attackers actually took part in the assault. Hundreds of the police cadets, officials and civilians who were rescued have been placed under surveillance and won't be allowed to leave before their identity and backgrounds have been confirmed," sources involved in the operation said.

The militants stormed the police academy in a commando-style raid, killing eight police recruits. They fought a long battle with security forces, before four of them were killed and three surrendered.

Though the authorities have been unable to give an official figure of the number of attackers, injured police cadets haveu00a0 claimed there were at least 10 to 12 of them.
