"No one knows how many attackers actually took part in the assault. Hundreds of the police cadets, officials and civilians who were rescued have been placed under surveillance and won't be allowed to leave before their identity and backgrounds have been confirmed," sources involved in the operation said.
The militants stormed the police academy in a commando-style raid, killing eight police recruits. They fought a long battle with security forces, before four of them were killed and three surrendered.
Though the authorities have been unable to give an official figure of the number of attackers, injured police cadets haveu00a0 claimed there were at least 10 to 12 of them.
