Zurich: Hungary and Romania have been punished by European football's governing body UEFA for racist behaviour by their fans during recent Euro 2016 qualifiers.

According to UEFA, both sets of fans indulged in racist behaviour during the 0-0 draw between Hungary and Romania in a Group F qualifying match in Budapest on September 4.

UEFA officials also said that Hungarian fans disrupted the Romanian national anthem.

Both countries have been ordered to play their next matches behind closed doors and have copped identical fines of 70,000 euros each.

The Romanian federation have been fined an additional 60,000 euros for racist incidents during their 0-0 draw in an earlier match with Greece in Budapest.

The empty-stadium sanction will be served when Hungary host Faroe Islands on October 8. Romania will also play in front of empty stands when they host Finland in Bucharest for their final group game next month.

Hungary are third in Group F, trailing Romania for the second automatic qualifying place for Euro 2016 by three points.
