When the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan of the Centre stopped funding a school for HIV positive children, the Zilla Parishad (ZP) realised it had to do something fast if 50 children's future was to be safeguarded. The ZP promptly provided the school with two full-time teachers.
In spite of many awareness campaigns, HIV positive children remain stigmatised by society and are still not accepted in regular schools.
The school for HIV positive children was opened by veteran social worker Vijaya Lawate, who passed away five years ago.
ZP President Savita Dagde said earlier the school was run by Mahatma Phule Yogana, but it had to shut down when several small schemes were merged with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. "The decision to provide teachers was taken on Saturday evening in the teachers committee. This will benefit the school," she said. "The ZP is spending Rs 3 lakh a year on the school."
Ujwala Lawate and her husband Shirish, who look after the school, welcome the ZP initiative. "This has helped us continue with our aim. Otherwise the fate of these kids would have been in the dark," Shirish said.
School Superintendent Surendra Dalvi said of the 50 children there, 21 were girls.
"We make them comfortable. The school is from Standard I to VII and it will develop with the help of
people and positive support like that extended by the ZP," he said.
