The recent Supreme Court judgement that declared homosexuality a criminal act came as a strong blow against the LGBT (lesbian gay bisexual and transgender) community but gay activists have managed to win the first war in their quest for justice and make their displeasure heard loud and clear. After the State government refused to give permission to conduct a protest march at Shivaji Park, the LGBT community will now hold the rally today at Maheshwari Udyan, Matunga at 3 pm.

Apart from Mumbai, protests will also be held at Chennai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Berlin, Johannesburg, San Francisco, London and Toronto.Pic for representational purpose only

Sibi Mathen of The Humsafar Trust, which is one of the many organisations conducting the rally, said, “This is part of a global protest that is being held in almost two dozen cities across the world such as Chennai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Berlin, Johannesburg, San Francisco, London and Toronto. We will observe December 15 as Global Day of Rage. It an opportunity for everyone irrespective of their sexuality to come and join us for the rallyto repeal Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.”

The judgement has also been a catalyst in helping people from the LGBT community to come out of the closet. SUNDAY MiD DAY met 21-year-old Abhijit V (name changed on request), who confessed about being a homosexual to his mother, a day after the SC judgment.

He said, “I had never planned to confess to my parents. But after the verdict, I decided to speak to my mother. I’m glad she received it well. I feel that this is the right time for everyone to come out of the closet. We should come together as a community.” u00a0
