India's private air carrier, Jet Airways on Wednesday increased its fuel surcharge by Rs.400 on all domestic sectors, and attributed it to an increase in aviation fuel prices.

The fuel surcharge will be applicable on all Jet Airways, Jet Airways Konnect and JetLite flights from Wednesday.

An average fare for the Delhi-Mumbai sector for an economic class ticket will now be anywhere between Rs.5500 to Rs.7000.

"The increase was necessitated by sharp increase in ATF (aviation turbine fuel) prices by 33 percent since March 2009," the airlines said in a statement Wednesday.

"The fare hike was inevitable," Jet Airways had said after state-run oil firms Monday hiked fuel prices by 12 percent, the sixth increase since March 16.

ATF now costs Rs.36,252 per kilolitre in Delhi, Rs.3,949 more than what it was June 15. In Mumbai, it will cost Rs.37,367 per kilolitre as compared to Rs.33,260 earlier.

National carrier Air India said it has not decided on a fare hike. "We have not decided on it so far," a spokesperson said.

Kingfisher Airlines had Monday said it was examining the impact of the latest ATF price hike and would take a decision shortly.

International crude oil prices are now ruling at a seven-month high of $72 per barrel.
