A new-born boy, barely five -hour-old, was left at the doorstep of a woman in Udayanagar, near K R Puram police station, last night. The infant has been admitted to a private hospital and her condition is said to be critical.

According to the police, on Monday night, Sudha (22) had barely gone inside her home after washing utensils when someone knocked on the door.

She opened the door to see her neighbour Shailaja, who told her about the child at her doorstep, said a police officer. While the residents believe that the act could be done by someone who was hiding an illicit affair, the police are investigating the matter.

She asked Shailaja about the baby, and Shailaja claimed that she saw some woman putting the baby down and run. Since the baby was shivering, Sudha wrapped it in a cloth and suggested that they take the baby to the hospital, but Shailaja objected to it strongly.

This made Sudha suspicious, and she said she wanted to file a police complaint. This scared Shailaja and she started pleading.

Sudha gathered her neighbours, and told them the story. But as they arrived, Shailaja fled the spot. The gathered crowd decided to call local councillor Prasad, who arrived on spot, and took the baby to Vijaya Hospital.

On arrival, the doctors diagnosed the baby and found it to be suffering from respiratory problems, and put it in an incubator. They have put it under observation for 24 hours. Sudha said, "I believe its Shailaja's baby from an illicit affair.

I am glad we took him to the hospital, or she would have dumped it into a gutter."

Narayanapura councillor Prasad said, "We will initiate an investigation and find the baby's parents, and punish them. This is very disturbing." we leave here others may think to do the same."

Vijay M, a doctor, said, " The baby is in a serious condition, and we have put it in an incubator. We will be doing other check ups to stabilise her. They will be done by tomorrow morning.
