The civic body is in the process of locating an open space away from the hill for constructing of the plant, where it would cause minimum harm to the environment.

Earlier this month, this newspaper reported on how over 500 indigenous trees and a few quarries in Panchvati Hill area could face a major threat if the PMC’s proposal to construct a biogas power plant was approved.

Residents of the neighboring Panchavati Society and several environmentalists, including NGO Green Panchvati Hill, which has planted several trees on the hill, claimed that the biogas plant would be disastrous to the environment and opposed it.

Their fears were based on the fact that the surrounding greenery would have to be cleared for the plant to be set up. Also, the plant would generate around five tonnes of garbage everyday and the stench emitted would cause a major inconvenience to residents of the area.

Pramod Yadav, special officer in charge of waste disposal and processing at PMC, said that the matter was not entirely one-sided.

“Some residents have approved the plan while some are opposing it. We, however, are deciding over building it at a distance from the hill where there will be no damage to the trees or quarries,” Yadav said.

The residents claimed that there was no need to process garbage as there are no hotels or restaurants in the area, while Panchavati Society has only 1,500 residents who generate less than a tonne of kitchen waste. u00a0
