Three persons were injured, one seriously, when a speeding tempo collided with a truck on Wednesday night at Wakdewadi Bridge. The truck driver, who was trapped inside his vehicle, was identified as Siddhu Pethe (42) from Pimpri-Chinchwad.
A profusely bleeding Pethe was rushed to the Sassoon hospital. The other two victims could not be identified yet.The fire brigade officials and local citizens rescued the trio from the mangled remains of the vehicles after an hour-long drama.
Fireman Sunil Narsingh who first reached the spot at 11.15 pm told MiD DAY that the accident was a result of a head-on collision between the tempo, headed for Shivajinagar, and the truck, going heading towards Mumbai.
Three fire brigade rescue vans, four ambulances, one crane and an earthmover were pressed into service.
"Tempo driver Pethe was trapped for almost an hour and several attempts to rescue him failed initially. Only after the door to the tempo was cut, we could reach him," Narsingh said.
u00a0Meanwhile, a large mob had gathered at the spot hampering the rescue operations. Inspector Satish Devare and other cops from the Khadki police station had a tough time managing the crowd and resorted to a mild lathi-charge couple of times.
A traffic police officer said: "The accident may have happened because of over speeding.u00a0
The spot has a sharp curve due to whichu00a0 heavy vehicles often lose their control."
