If you thought a music performance is all about instruments like drums, or guitars, check out beatboxing, a genre of vocal percussion where rhythmical sounds are created using just one's mouth, lips, tongue and voice. Make sure you meet The Boxettes, a female vocal quintet from UK, who are in town to familiarise you with the experience.

The five-piece band comprises of Alyusha Chagrin (vocals, lip bass, sirens), Belle "'Bellatrix" Ehresmann (beatbox, lip bass, scratching), Harriet Syndercombe-Court (vocals, high hats), Neo "Just Bop" Joshua (vocals, bass, kicks) and Yvette Riby-Williams (vocals, beats'n'bobs). Each come from a variety of musical backgrounds and boast of unique styles. The Boxettes came together in 2007 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where they all study Jazz, apart from Yvette (who just graduated). This melting pot of contrasting voices led them to come up with a versatile and original sound. Their show is a concoction of soulful grooves and dirty beats laced with Jazz and with a classical intention.

"Beatboxing is the ability to imitate drum kit patterns and grooves using only percussive sounds produced with your mouth, but it has evolved and includes a huge range of sounds and vocal techniques. Some of these include Mongolian throat singing, vocal scratching and lip bass. The beatbox sounds take a lot of practice to make sure that the sounds remain consistent," states Yvette.u00a0 It was Belle who decided they should form a band as there were few serious women beatboxers in the world and they wanted to inspire more girls and women to take this music art form seriously.

The band states that their play lists are not finalised till the day of the gig. "We will use a lot of vocal scratching, electric snares, filters and shakers along with some of the unique sounds that we have created ourselves as well as improvised parts to a few of our tunes. At times, we jam on stage and create new stuff on the spot," adds Yvette. She states that every Boxette is a stunning solo artist in her own right. They are inspired by beatbox groups like Bauchklang.
