Patient Googles grandma's case history; finds faults in treatment. Allegedly thrashes doc, who is now in coma

Little knowledge can be dangerous and Dr S C Gupta learnt it the hard way.

The 71-year-old cardiologist was allegedly thrashed by the grandson of one of his patients who had died in March this year, because Google results showed there might have been some loopholes in her treatment.

Two months after his grandmother died of a cardiac ailment, Deepak Bilani searched the Internet about her diagnosis and treatment.

When he reached the list of tests, apparently critical to the treatment of her ailment, he got to know that the doctor had missed out on one.

Bilani assumed that if the test would have been conducted, he might not have lost his grandmother.

The trap

On June 1,u00a0 Bilani called up Dr Gupta who had operated upon his grandmother to attend to a critical patient at Rajouri Garden.

The doctor left his clinic to visit the patient. While his driver was parking the car near Bilani'su00a0 MIG Flat, the angry man came charging at the cardiologist and started bashing him. The senior doctor was no match for the furious Bilani.

Gupta's driver tried to intervene but it was too late. He called the police and the doctor's family.

Dr Gupta was rushed to a nearby clinic in an unconscious state and then to the Artemis Health Institute in Gurgaon where the senior cardiologist is battling for life, according to doctors.

Bilani was arrested for assault, but as the doctor had no visible physical injury, he was released on bail. Meanwhile, Gupta is yet to gain consciousness even after 11 days of the assault.

Dr Gupta's son Aditya told MiD DAY that the clinic where Gupta was rushed to after the incident "declared no major injury was inflicted upon him and that's why Bilani got bail so easily."

Doc may die

"My father is very critical.u00a0 Doctors have told us his chances of survival are very less," he added.

Initially, Bilani refused to talk to MiD DAY. But when he was told that we had a copy of the complaint against him, he said, "I don't know what you are talking about."

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Aggarwal said, "Bilani's offence was bailable because there were no visible injury marks on Dr Gupta's body.
