Demand for beer, wine and Indian-made liquour shoots up in the city


Temperatures have dropped in Pune and the onset of the monsoons has made the climate pleasant. Andu00a0 Puneites are making the most of the weather by stocking up on drinks.

The demand for beer, wine and India-made liquour has shot up considerably. Vikram Mehta, manager, Zaafran, told MiD DAY, "There's an increase in demand for beer and wine amongst youngters."

He added that the demand dips marginally during Shravan, but picks up immediately after.

Deputy Commissioner of State Excise Department (Pune distirict) said, "Five years ago, there used to be considerable fall in the demand for liquor between June to October, but this is changing." According to their statistics, Indian-made liquor experienced a growth of 20.48, 18.66, 5.67, 18.072 per cent between the month of June to September last yearu00a0u00a0 as compared to 2007.

Praful Chandawarkar, owner of Malaka Spice and partner of Post 91, said, "We experience a 25 to 30 per cent drop in beer consumption in the monsoon, but demand for vodka, rum and whiskey remains high."

Parag Kathuria, director of sales at Taj Blue Diamond, said, "Socialising and dinners are fast becoming a part of Pune culture. It's natural for liquour sales to increase." Sandip Desai, a software professional, said, "Monsoon is the prefect season to enjoy your drink."
